I had just posted my best friend Ricky Lopez-Vito's 44th birth anniversary notice here a few days ago when I received the tragic news of Toto Torres' death last Saturday of a heart attack at the age of 42. We are deeply saddened by Toto's death and the entire L.A. Zamboanga Times family offer our condolences and prayers to Toto's family back home. Toto's death as well as Ricky's (who passed away Sept. 15 last year in Bacolod City at the age of 43, also of a heart attack) and a number of other childhood friends and schoolmates of ours--- should serve as a "wake up call" for our generation to start changing our lifestyles. Pompeyo (Toto) Torres, pictured left, son of the late Pompeyo Torres and Gloria Suarez-Torres, died of a heart attack at around 1 a.m. early Saturday, Feb. 19, in Zamboanga City. He was 42 years old. I'm sending you one of his latest pics which we used for our list of officers for the Ateneo Alumni Association where he serves as a Board of Director. Fr. Kreutz and I will be visiting Toto tonight where Fr. Kreutz will bless the body. On Thursday, Feb 24, Toto's High School Class of 1979 led by Elmer Apolinario will sponsor a wake mass at La Merced. Officiating priest will be Fr. Florencio Cuerquis, SJ (our new incoming Grade School Principal). Toto will be laid to rest on Friday, Feb. 25 at Forest Lake Memorial Park in Tumaga.
