Rejoicing
in the misfortunes of others
LOS
ANGELES --- What do we call supposedly church-going and deeply religious
Catholics who rejoice in the misfortunes of others?
Here in the Zamboangueno community in Los Angeles I know several individuals
who fit the description above. And all I can do is to watch in awe. What
makes them think they are better than the rest of us? Is it because they
go to church every Sunday even though they spend Mondays through Friday
trying to destroy the lives of others that include their own relatives?
I know exactly how it feels to be on the receiving end of this vicious
and very un-Christian acts. I know because I have several relatives who
fit the description above.
What these people don't realize is that Satan is happily awaiting their
arrival in Hell when Judgement Day comes.
Oh, one more thing. I advise them to bring their abanicos when their
time comes for all I know it gets very hot in Hell even during winter time.

In the next
week or so, more than 80,000 Filipinos will be deported to the Philippines
by the Malaysian government with Zamboanga City serving as their final
destination.
In fact, the exodus of these refugees to the City of Flowers have already
started and our city, once again, will be in the receiving end of this
problem as in the past.
My questions are: How will the city officials in Zamboanga going to tackle
this problem? Have they come up with a contigency plan on how to deal with
the expected influx of transients in the city? Did they ask for monetary
help from the national government? Does the local government have the political
will to handle the arrival of the refugees?
We've had some really bad experiences in the past in dealing with refugees
who come to the city seeking temporary shelter from the decades old civil
war in the South.
In 1974, we witnessed thousands of refugees arriving in the city from Jolo
island when the Philippine government launched an all-out war against the
Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) that led to the burning and looting
of Jolo by government troops.
The Malaysian-government imposed deadline of August 24 in deporting undocumented
Filipinos in that country will no doubt trigger a crisis in the city in
terms of housing and rendering out government services to these refugees.
Our city officials---who have proven their inutileness in solving
similar problems in the past---know what they need to do when the August
24 comes.
And this time we hope they do their job right.
